Back to WordPress

It’s been a while I stepped out from php and all the related ecosystem, including WordPress as well.

Now I need to help a friend with his WordPress site, so it’s the perfect time to clear the dust from my WordPress account and setup a fresh site with it.

I’m also going to look into the migration from self hosted site to WordPress.com, to make everything easier to maintain for him.

And maybe, as the last resort if everything in his hands is too old and complicated, I’ll be looking into the development environment around a self hosted WordPress site.

First steps

Create a site from the WordPress.com site wizard. very easy, nothing to add here. Leave out all the unnecessary details, like logos, images, favicon and go straight to your running site.

Write up a first blog post to see how it’s going… The home page is already configured to show the blog posts in reverse chronological order. pretty handy.

Theme

Now pick the theme.

I went with free themes, just to know how much effortless it could be.

Once the theme has been activated, the site is presenting the content with the new look, hassle free.

Migrating and adapting my friend’s old site

First attempt was made using the export/import functionality:

  • from the old site’s admin panel click on export and choose all content to save an xml of all the content
  • in the new site’s admin click on import and select the saved xml file

it’s pretty much what was necessary.

Final thoughts, end of the story

This page is going to look pretty much like a lmgtfy result page, where somebody takes the time on behalf of someone else to make a quick search on google, and the result is so trivial that doesn’t need any further comment.
